EDUC 698 - COURSE PROJECT
Proposal
Purpose
The purpose of this project is to create the most effective version of a New Teacher Quick Guide Template. The template should be considered as something that can be adopted by any school in order to create continuity in the educational world and make the transition into a new school easier for teachers. From school to school, many things change such as school policies, faculty contact information, and emergency procedures. New teachers are sometimes left to sink or swim when they enter a new school community and therefore, it is necessary to create a New Teacher Quick Guide Template that will include information about the school such as grading procedures, administration contact information, school procedures, and bell schedule. The New Teacher Quick Guide template when completed will be in a digital Microsoft Word format or easy editing and sending purposes and will include important information that can be given to a new faculty for them to reference at any point in order to quickly and easily acclimate to their new environment. In addition, the creation of this template is expected to decrease the difficulty and stress involved with taking on a new teaching position.
Rationale
As a military spouse relocation is inevitable and therefore causes becoming a member of a new school community each time and in places all over the world. This can sometimes be a difficult adaptation and has inspired the need for this unified document. In addition, budget cuts and school closures often require teachers to be excessed and relocated to other schools. Furthermore, there are thousands of teachers that are either new to the teaching profession or changing schools each year that will need to adjust to the new school environment. Even with the adoption of virtual schools, the trends of new teachers will remain consistent. Therefore, support for new teachers is an important aspect that can sometimes be overlooked by administration due to various circumstances. This template will provide a way to bridge the gaps and make the transition into a new school environment more unified.
Research-based
The projected research that will be included are various New Teacher Handbooks, important information that is considered “need to know” for teachers, information on best practices for teacher support, teacher viewpoints, struggles of new teachers, the trend of retention, and statistics of new teachers. The New Teacher Handbooks are going to be as wide ranging as possible including handbooks from schools in different locations as well as various school types. Research will be conducted to determine what teachers “need to know” when entering a new school. Information will also be provided about the support that new teachers need when coming to a new school as well as personal accounts of how new teachers feel. The typical struggles a new teacher faces will be researched in order to lead to information that one might need provided when attending a new school. One of the trends of teaching that remains current every year is the retention of new teachers in the profession. Therefore, there will also be a quantitative aspect referring to the amount of new teachers that are in the school system each year.
Project Application
The New Teacher Quick Guide template will be used in the DoDEA school system. The template can be shared at the district level for the potential of adoption in all DoDEA schools. Until universal acceptance of the template by schools across the nation, the template document will aid in my transitions from school to school.
Description of Outcomes
As a result of completing this project, new teachers will feel more comfortable with transitioning into a new school. This will apply to all teachers from any experience level including first years and be measured through surveys. This could also potentially increase the amount of first year teachers that remain in the profession if they feel as the completed New Teacher Quick Guides provide them with more support. Once this template has been universally adopted, statistics may show this increase. In addition, this author foresees the adoption of this template in KMS as well as throughout the entire DoDEA school district and hopefully to other school districts as well.
